The Utter Spinelessness of Senate Republicans
All but two Senate Republicans, Senator Ayotte of New Hampshire and Senator Kirk of Illinois, voted to defeat Senator Feinstein’s Amendment, S.Amdt. 4720, to restrict the purchase of firearms to individuals on the terror watch list.
The language of the amendment is clear and straight forward. There are no gimmicks. There is no hidden language to take guns from all Americans. The Feinstein Amendment is a simple, one-line piece of legislation that reads:
S.Amdt. 4720 — 114th Congress (2015-2016)
“To authorize the Attorney General to deny requests to transfer a firearm to known or suspected terrorists.”
That’s it. That’s the entire amendment.
This is perhaps the most cowardly vote taken by the United States Senate in the past five decades. The NRA is so dedicated to making money for gun manufacturers, gun and ammunition dealers, and associated businesses that it cannot stand the thought of losing a penny of sales…not even to suspected terrorists. And Senate Republicans do their bidding without question or concern for the American people.
This is one of the most egregious betrayals of the public trust I have ever witnessed. Had Senate Republicans passed this legislation and put pressure on the house to do the same, they would have prevented the next radicalized terrorist from walking into a gun shop and purchasing the gun he/she will use to murder innocent people…period.
This is a grotesque abdication of the Senate oath of office, which states:
I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.
This cowardice warrants the defeat of every single member of the Senate who voted Nay.
Here is the vote tally:
Every Senator who voted “Nay” on this amendment must be voted out of office and that includes Senator Collins as much as it hurts me to say it. There can be no more wavering on this issue. People are dying and we are doing nothing to stop it BY CHOICE. Our elected officials are choosing to allow the continuation of slaughter.
We have to vote these cowards out of office. This country simply cannot risk another moment of such spinelessness.
